What is the In-Person Virtual Dementia Tour® Simulation Experience?

In short, it is an in-person simulated experience, that physically transports you for 20 minutes into the world of dementia by altering all of your senses.

When a loved one or friend is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia, we are as overwhelmed as the one with the diagnosis.  Suddenly we need new ways to communicate. We are unsure whether even the simplest of tasks, such as getting dressed, must be met by a new approach. We wonder why there is so much fear of walking, even within the home. Why does being in a room with other people suddenly seem to cause so much distress?

The Virtual Dementia Tour® also referred to as “VDT”, attempts to help you understand and answer these questions. It is a ground-breaking, evidence-based, and scientifically proven method of building a greater understanding of dementia. The VDT uses patented sensory tools and instruction based on research conducted by P.K. Beville, M.S., a specialist in geriatrics and the founder of Second Wind Dreams®. During a Virtual Dementia Tour® experience, trained facilitators guide participants outfitted with patented devices that alter their senses while they try to complete common everyday tasks and exercises. The Tour enables caregivers and loved ones to experience for themselves the physical and mental challenges those with dementia face and use the experience to provide better person-centered care.

Imagine that your senses are suddenly altered, and if you cannot, we invite you to experience a Virtual Dementia Tour® at Residences Senior Living.  Our Virtual Dementia Tours are free of charge and will take about 20 minutes to complete.

What can I expect with a Virtual Dementia Tour® experience?

The physical experience consists of a series of simulated events in which all your senses are altered. The Virtual Dementia Tour® is not intended to help diagnose dementia or Alzheimer’s.  In fact, these experiences may cause distress and disorientation to those who may be having symptoms of dementia. Participants should be families, friends, or caregivers who will benefit from “walking in my shoes.” As others who have experienced the VDT stated, “It is a true head-to-toe experience, there is an immediate and lasting change of perception.”

For example, participants are dressed in an outfit that alters senses so you can see how it feels to wear clothing that no longer feels familiar. All the experiences have been designed by Second Wind Dreams®, as a “window into their world” to simulate how it feels to have obstacles to daily living and once-familiar activities that are no longer recalled. You should expect disruptions to balance and walking or standing. Equipment is used to also alter vision and hearing, if you have trouble with strobe or flashing lights, this experience may not be for you.  Expect different sensations for hands and feet which may lead to further disorientation

A small strobe light/flashing light is used during the experience. If you are prone to migraines or seizures it is an absolute MUST to tell staff BEFORE you take the tour.
