Celebrate and Connect with Mom – May 10 and Every Day!

Spring in Chesterton! The new tradition of the annual opening of the Chesterton Farmers’ Market fills the air with local vendors and neighbors catching up. Families stroll through booths, grab dinner, and enjoy a slower Wednesday together.

Moments like these remind us how important it is to spend time with the people who matter most—especially our moms.  This Mother’s Day, consider giving Mom the best gift ever– your presence and authentic connection. Let her feel that she matters.

As years pass, many families notice a gentle shift in roles. While she once cared for us and guided our lives, Mom may now need a little more support herself. Caring for Mom isn’t only about helping with health or daily needs—it’s about companionship, connection, and spending meaningful time together.

It’s challenging! Busy schedules, responsibilities, and constant rushing load everyday life. Conversations with Mom can become quick texts or brief phone calls. Setting aside intentional time to truly connect is a small step to make a vital difference.

Connection begins with conversation, not from constant interrogation; it grows through listening, sharing stories, and showing interest in what matters to her.

Research from the Gerontological Society of America found that 67 percent of older adultsreport experiencing conflict with their adult children, with nearly one-third identifying communication as the root of the issue. As parents age, changes in memory, mood, or cognition can sometimes create frustration on both sides. Patience, empathy, and flexibility can help keep communication strong.

Often the best conversations happen during everyday moments—sharing a meal, taking a walk, reminiscing about family traditions, or laughing about old stories. These small moments reinforce a powerful message: Mom’s experiences and perspective still matter deeply.

At Residences at Coffee Creek, those moments happen every week during market season. Executive Director Kaitlynn Redmon shares the story of one resident whose daughter visits every Wednesday.

“They stroll through the vendor booths, enjoy lunch, and then return to Mom’s apartment balcony overlooking the market. Together, they people-watch, laugh and hug. It’s a simple evening, filled with connection. That’s the best part of senior living—creating opportunities for families to enjoy time together.”

Karen Ayresman, Executive Director, Residences at Deer Creek reflects “Mother’s Day–that beautiful reminder to celebrate Mom can be every day by simply showing up—sharing time, conversation, and moments that strengthen family bonds.

We always encourage families to join the entertainment and the activities residents enjoy each month.  Check the web and Facebook postings regularly.  Pick up a copy of the monthly calendar in the Lobby.  Your suggestions are always welcome, too!”
