Get in the fall spirit and show off your skills in Residences Senior Living’s annual scarecrow contest!
Who Can Participate?
Schools, nonprofit and community organizations, youth groups, local businesses, and clubs are all welcome to participate.
When is the Contest?
Groups can construct and set up their scarecrow display from Oct. 19-21 at the Residences at Coffee Creek campus (2300 Village Point, Chesterton, Ind.) or Residences at Deer Creek campus (401 E. U.S. 30, Schererville, Ind.).
The deadline to enter is Oct. 12; the number of entries will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so don’t wait to sign up!

How Does the Contest Work?
Your group will construct a scarecrow of your own choosing and design to be judged by the public. Make this a fun team-building event for your group – warm apple cider and cookies will be available during set-up days. And did we mention the prizes?
1st Place Prize: $500
2nd Place Prize: $250
3rd Place Prize: Trophy
We’ll provide a 10×10 space for you to set up your creation. Make sure to bring supplies, a post, and anything else you’ll need. The rest is up to your imagination! Choose a patriotic, scary, or Halloween theme, or create something entirely your own.
Scarecrows will remain up from Oct. 22-31 for public voting, with the winners announced Nov. 1. Make sure your group’s scarecrow is taken down by Nov. 3.
Tips for Building Your Scarecrow
Here are a few tips to get starting with building your scarecrow this season (and by the way, did you know scarecrows actually work – sort of?).
- Start with a solid frame. This will form the backbone of your scarecrow, so make sure it’s sturdy.
- Try out different materials for the head. This article has ideas to get your creative juices flowing – try a burlap sack, flowerpot, or even a pumpkin for the head.
- Don’t forget clothes for your scarecrow. There’s the traditional version with a plaid shirt and overalls, but don’t be afraid to get creative.
- Add interesting touches. Is your scarecrow character a peaceful farmer? A lumberjack? An accountant? Add props and accessories for humorous or detailed touches.
